Wanted - Crosswalk to Fairview Mall

Today kicks off the project that's been in my head for too long!
Now that I work at the Fairview Mall LCBO in St. Catharines Ontario,
the need for a crosswalk on Geneva St. at Wood St. and also Wood St.
and Carlton is so very obvious it's appalling that the citizens of
our city haven't revolted over this yet.
My parents live off of Wood St. and the only way for them to
safely cross to the Fairview Mall is at the only light at the entrance to the mall.
I challenge everyone to attempt to cross at those lights and see how
difficult and unsafe it is.
With only ONE crosswalk on the south side of that intersection,
and there being a plaza across from the Fairview Mall MOST OF THE VEHICULAR
TRAFFIC IS TURNING NORTH OR SOUTH FROM THE MALL!
and this is when pedestrians are attempting to cross the ONE & ONLY
crosswalk between Scott St. and Carlton/QEW on Geneva St.
Did you know that located on Wood St. are the Parks & Rec dept. of the City of
St. Catharines with all their trucks and motorized equipment, Lancaster Park with its Ball Park, Soccer Field and large Swimming Pool and off Wood St. are 2 seniors homes and 50 odd homes and a Church.
A city bus services Wood St.

ALL THIS TRAFFIC MUST ENTER AND EXIT AT EITHER GENEVA ST. OR CARLTON ST.!!!

And all with NO TRAFFIC LIGHTS, CROSSWALKS OR WARNING SIGNS!

On Carlton St. you can either cross at the intersection at Vine Street or again,
you must go all the way to Geneva/QEW to attempt to cross the street!!

In an area of pedetrians and drivers including city workers, seniors, churchgoers, swimmers, ball players, game watchers children, etc......
demonstrates that the people in charge NEVER visit this area of the city and obviously do not LIVE in this area or there would be safer options for all our citizens.

Have you driven on Scott St. between Geneva & Niagara?? Plenty of safe places to cross Scott St.

Have you driven by Memorial School or Hotel Dieu and seen or used the on-demand crossing lights?

and what about 4th avenue from Ontario to 3rd St. Louth???
Enough traffic lights and crossings? Again, PLENTY!!!

The minimum safety feature that is acceptable is an ON DEMAND CROSS LIGHT at Wood St. and Geneva St.
and at Wood St. and Carlton.
Anything less is dangerous to all who use this area of the city.

I challenge the owners of the Fairview Mall and the LCBO and the City of St. Catharines and The Niagara Region to build safer access for pedestrians AND drivers who live or frequent this area.

More to come.....
see pics soon!!

Hey Bee
Congratulations on this Art Project.. there isn't enough "Artistic Creative Development" around in the schools, life programs and society any more..

I think an "ON DEMAND" crosswalk is worth the awareness. Just today, here in 'sunny California' a average blind man, trying to walk across an off street from Westwood Blvd and Wilshire was ignored and cars pulled in front of him while he was LEGALLY trying to cross the street.
Of Course, being the native Canadian Italian woman from back East that I am... I stopped traffic in all directions and yelled to the sweet man that I was going to assist him in crossing the street.. he graciously accepted and thanked me.... Now I am not posting this for gratitude or praise, cuz I couldn't care at all about that..... I'm posting this because in this crazy busy world that YES we did create,,, that it still goes on that we only think of oneself... so if in a big city like WESTWOOD CA that people aren't paying attention, well then of course... St KITTS as I know it by that name... is surely going to just think of what traffic is... not including the latest pedestrian allocation...

Hey, here in LA, not comparing to Canada, but still..... the PEDESTRIAN has the"right of way" even if J-WalKing... you may get a ticket but you still have the right of way... ok, you also don't want to stop the "Flow of Traffic" either... that's a big one here as well.... still, common sense...
if someone is trying to cross the street, it's because of a reason...
Right or Wrong.... please you 1000 lb or more cars..slow down.... even if you wait a total of 1 minute, the gas in your car will exceed the walking of a human...... and think of this... DO YOU REALLY WANT to HIT A HUMAN who is legally or ill-legally crossing the street....

DO the MATH... your car will always get there faster than the walker....

Benita, God Bless You for looking out for the average person, the elderly, the children on their bikes... shall I go on.......

Hey, the Fairview Mall for as long as I have gone there.... with my grandma as well, has always wanted people to stop by and not go to the PEN CENTRE...and now I am most definitely sure that the LCBO would really like their patrons to arrive ALIVE... ha ha....

So what's it going to be St. Catharines...... LOOK out for you fellow man... or just look out for the local businesses (that are tooo consumed with the dollar that comes in right now)

What has happened with "Customer Service, Caring or Looking out for One Another or here's a good one.... People in General" what's going on, that we blame an elderly person for crossing the street cause it's too long for a walk to cross where the "CITY" or in this case the "REGION" tells us to cross..... ok, put Your Gramma to the test...
Can she walk all that way????

Go for it Bee
I applaude your AWARENESS..... I love St. Kitts, always have..
but lets get it up to speed, or rather... slow down the speed and SMELL THE ROSES...!!

BEST Wishes...

LOS Angeles.... where yes... we do get along and think of others...
